What are lab-grown diamonds? How do they compare to natural diamonds, and are they worth it? We’ve been hearing more questions like these lately. At Miriam’s Jewelry, we’ll always keep you in the know.

As your favorite family jeweler, we’re here to help you make the best decisions when purchasing jewelry you’ll treasure for a lifetime.

Here’s the Short Answer

Lab-created diamonds are chemically the same as natural, mined diamonds. They are more affordable, but their value likely will not hold up over time. They will also never have the same rarity, uniqueness and meaning as a natural stone that was formed over billions of years deep in the earth.

That said, we’re all about choices at Miriam’s, and we always put customers first. If you’re interested in purchasing a lab-made diamond, we’ve compiled all the facts, pros and cons to consider.

What is a Lab-Grown Diamond?

Lab-created diamonds, also known as man-made diamonds, are grown in a lab. They are identical to natural diamonds in every way, including the way they sparkle and their durability. You can’t tell the difference by looking. They have the same chemical and physical properties as diamonds found in the earth, and are considered the same gemstone under the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

How Are They Made?

Lab-made diamonds are created using diamond seeds from pre-existing diamonds. The process mimics the natural formation of traditional, mined diamonds, which are formed deep in the earth’s crust, under conditions of heat and pressure. A diamond’s natural process takes billions of years to form.

On the other hand, diamonds created in a lab take only a matter of weeks to form. Just like natural diamonds, they are made from pure carbon. There are two types of processes used by diamond labs, High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).

Lab-Created Diamonds Are Not Diamond Simulants

It’s important to note that lab-created diamonds are not the same as diamond simulants, such as cubic zirconia or moissanite. Also known as “imitation diamonds,” diamond simulants are manufactured to look like diamonds. But they are composed of different materials, such as glass—not carbon.

Pros to Buying Lab-Grown

One of the top reasons to buy lab-created diamonds is that they are more affordable. Man made diamonds can cost up to 30 to 40 percent less than natural diamonds of the same size and quality. That’s because the process of mining natural diamonds is time-consuming, difficult, and expensive. Diamonds from a lab simply cost less to make.

More Options

Given the cost savings, you’ll also have more choices in the type of diamond you can buy. More expensive colors like blue and pink diamonds, which are naturally very rare, may be more doable for your budget. You can also get a larger stone for your money.

Remember that lab-made diamonds are valued on the same 4Cs—cut, color, clarity and carat. You will want to consider this grading before purchasing a diamond of any kind to ensure high quality.

Another benefit is that man-made diamonds are conflict free and more sustainable. There are potentially fewer environmental impacts since they are not mined from the earth, and they may be safer to make. However, lab-made diamonds still use tons of energy and take enormous factories to produce, so they may not be as environmentally-friendly as we think.

Cons to Buying Lab-Grown

Unlikely to Hold Value

You may want to trade-in or trade-up a lab-made diamond in a few years, only to find it’s worth pennies on what you paid for. That’s because more and more lab-made diamonds are being made every day. The greater the supply, the less valuable the product. You may pay less to buy your diamond now, but you likely won’t get much, if anything, back from it later.
Natural diamonds are more of an investment because they will always be a rare commodity. Since they took billions of years to form, there will only be so many natural diamonds available in our lifetime. Natural diamonds hold up their value much better and can be used to trade-in or trade-up in the future.

Less Meaningful

Diamonds became a symbol of ever-lasting love because of the incredible journey they take to form and be mined naturally from the earth. Each stone is meaningful, rare and unique.

Lab-made diamonds are mass produced, therefore they lose the rarity, the charm, and specialness that come from natural diamonds.

Whichever Diamond You Choose, Miriam’s Jewelry Is Here to Help

If you’re on a budget and want to purchase a rarer color or larger diamond now, a lab-made diamond may be the right choice for you. But if you are wanting a long-term investment, and if the meaning behind diamonds matters to you, it may be better to wait and save for that natural diamond you’ll always treasure.

No matter what you’re shopping for, we can help you choose the perfect thing, including custom engagement rings, diamond earrings and diamond bands. We don’t stock lab-grown diamond rings, but we can always help you find one. Contact Miriam’s Jewelry to schedule a personal design consultation.

Emeralds are one of the most precious gems available, coming in striking green shades that are absolutely beautiful. These stones mostly come from Brazil, Columbia and Zambia—and they look amazing set in white or yellow gold. They come in all kinds of styles, too, which means there is always something available whether you’re looking for a traditional look or something that suits modern fantasies.

Looking for emeralds to add to your collection? Here are some favorites that you can find at Miriam’s Jewelry.

Emerald Statement Rings

Few pieces have as much wow factor as a big, bold statement ring. Even if you’re dripping with diamonds, a massive emerald like this one will steal the show. Statement rings are perfect for people who want to make a big impression at formal affairs. Wear this one to your next gala, and you’ll see what we mean.

Dainty Emerald Studs

Looking for something more subtle? A pair of dainty emerald studs is the way to go. These offer a classic, understated look—but the rich green shade stands out enough to be noticed. Studs are perfect for casual outfits, but you can also pair them with bold pieces to put a formal look together.

Diamond & Emerald Stud Earrings

For something with sophistication, try mixing vibrant stones. These diamond and emerald earrings combine bold diamond halos with emerald green and 18-karat white gold that you can wear casually or when you’re headed out for cocktails. Pair them with other pieces featuring diamonds or emeralds to create a cohesive—and glamorous—look.

Emerald and Diamond Band

This emerald and diamond band is a classic, ideal for everyday wear or accentuating something more formal. The emeralds stand out with their lovely shade of green, while the diamonds offer unparalleled sparkle that draws the eye to your hand. If you’re looking for a gift, this band is versatile enough for lots of looks, which makes it an ideal present for the girl who has everything—but always loves a little more jewelry.

Vintage Emerald Flower Pendant Necklace

Few things give a piece of jewelry a vintage look like beautiful beaded chains. This vintage emerald flower pendant necklace features deep green cabochon-cut emeralds complemented by yellow gold. It’s truly a stunning piece that is subtle enough for everyday wear or layer with an additional necklace for social occasions that call for jewelry that makes a statement without saying a word.

These are a few of our favorites here at Miriam’s jewelry, but if you shop our selection, you’ll find a wider variety of emeralds that is sure to have something suiting your tastes. We also offer custom design services if you’d like something personalized. Contact Miriam’s Jewelry to schedule a personal design consultation today.

By now it’s clear that nothing, not even a global pandemic, can stop love. And it definitely hasn’t put a stop to engagement and wedding season. The latest engagement ring and wedding band trends are getting more creative than ever.

Whether you already have the ring of your dreams picked out, or you and your partner are just starting to talk about what that bling might look like—you’ll want to be armed with all the latest engagement ring and wedding band trends before you safely visit your favorite jeweler or virtually discuss the ideal ring with a designer.

Three Stone Engagement Rings

The three-stone ring is one of the most popular engagement ring styles because of its rich cultural history. The three-stone engagement ring (also called the “trinity” or “trilogy” ring) represents friendship, love and fidelity or past, present and future. Three-stone engagement rings are also popular because they are versatile and more customizable than ever.

Statement Wedding Bands

Standalone wedding bands tend to be more affordable than classic bridal sets (depending on the style) and are easier to sanitize. The newest bands are bolder than ever. And for those of you who want their wedding band to stand out without forgoing the engagement ring with a center stone, you still have options. You can wear your engagement ring and wedding band on separate hands or fingers, or wear your engagement ring on certain days and your band on others.

Vintage Engagement Rings

Take a cue from the engagement ring trends of bygone eras and consider a sparkler with Victorian or art deco flair. What sets vintage engagement rings apart from the rest? There is a certain appeal to buying an engagement ring with its own personal history. You may just start a new family tradition when you choose a beautiful, stylish and unique vintage ring that will remain in your family for generations to come.

Unique Rings With Personal Details

Focusing on personal touches on engagement rings and wedding bands has gotten more and more popular after a year of such uncertainty. At Miriam’s, we are seeing a rise in alternative rings as people are searching for ways to do things differently. People are looking to add another layer to the traditional wedding band, putting some extra love and meaning behind it.

Alternative Gemstones and Metals

Couples are also opting for gemstones as alternatives to diamonds and choosing metals that feel unexpected. Colorful gemstones in round, oval and modern geometric shapes are becoming a popular alternative aesthetic. It’s nice to have something that no one else is wearing.

Finding the perfect gemstone can be difficult. You’ll need to weigh your budget, the type of stone, color, cut, setting, and whether you want a custom piece, vintage jewelry, estate jewelry or something new in order to invest in a piece that you’ll love for years to come. We can help make that choice easier. Contact Miriam’s Jewelry to schedule a personal design consultation or jewelry appraisal today.

Ryan L. knew he was going to propose soon, and he wanted to make sure he had the perfect diamond engagement ring for his soon-to-be fiancé. Ryan embarked on his engagement ring hunt with his fiancé’s Pinterest board as his inspiration.

Before finding Miriam’s, Ryan visited another local jewelry store that did not meet his expectations. After spending an hour and a half going through what he described as “diamond school,” Ryan left unsatisfied with the customer service and without an engagement ring.

Ryan’s meeting was everything he could have hoped for in a jewelry consultation. He showed his fiancé’s Pinterest inspiration board, and they quickly got to work finding Ryan’s fiancé the perfect engagement ring. After hearing about his struggle, Ryan’s brother-in-law recommended he visit Miriam’s Jewelry. That same week, Ryan took his advice and made the trip to Miriam’s. From the moment he entered the store, it was as if the stars had aligned.

They worked with his budget and gave him the option between four diamonds attuned to his fiancé’s wishes.

“It wasn’t a sales thing. It was like they were my consultants. I knew they had my best interest in mind,” said Ryan.

By purchasing from Miriam’s Jewelry, Ryan managed to save a lot of money. Had he stuck with the first jeweler he visited, he would have paid nearly thousands more for the same diamond ring.

This dedication to service is what made Ryan feel confident in his purchase and investment. With the blessing of his fiancé’s sister, Ryan bought the ring and set out to propose.

The ring was everything his fiancé, Clara, could have dreamed of. She was completely shocked by the ring’s “one-of-a-kind” nature. Ryan was so pleased with his experience that he also purchased a custom ring and necklace from Miriam’s Jewelry as Clara’s wedding gift. The heirloom pieces were made using his mother’s ring.

Ryan’s story reminds others not to settle for anything less than what your partner deserves. Miriam’s Jewelry has over 50 years of experience providing in-depth, personalized consultations to make your jewelry dreams come true. With three convenient locations Jacksonville Beach, San Marco Square, and Ponte Vedra Beach, you won’t have to travel far to find your next customized accessory. The stars will align when you visit Miriam’s Jewelry.

Thinking about investing in a gemstone? It’s tempting to purchase whatever happens to catch your eye, but gemstones are a big investment that create heirlooms and vintage pieces for many generations. To invest in the right piece, it’s best to shop at a local jewelry store run by gemstone experts. Here are a few things to consider when choosing the right gemstone for your jewelry.

Decide on Your Budget

Your budget isn’t just based on how much money you have saved to buy a gemstone. You should also ask yourself whether you want precious or semi-precious gems. Is this something you will wear every day? If so, it may be worth spending more.

For less than $100, you can purchase semi-precious gems like amethyst, citrine, peridot, turquoise and treated topaz. For less than $500, you can get semi-precious gems like tourmaline, opal, aquamarine, morganite, prasiolite, or garnet. For fine quality precious gems, anticipate spending $2,000 or more. The price will depend on the type and size of the gemstone.

Find the Right Shape

Gemstones come in several different shapes. These are a few of the most popular shapes.

  • Round: Popular for colorless diamonds.
  • Princess: Good for colorless diamonds. You’ll need to be careful if you’re considering using softer gemstones like emeralds because the delicate corners can chip.
  • Heart: Offers a unique, soft look.
  • Oval: This shape makes the finger appear longer and slimmer.
  • Pear: This is a teardrop-shaped cut.
  • Marquise: This is a unique shape that elongates the finger. It’s a blend of oval and pear shapes.
  • Cushion: Cushion cuts are the go-to shape for displaying colored gemstones.
  • Radiant: This is another popular shape for colored gemstones because light reflects off the gem in these rings.

Consider the type of gemstone you’re interested in, its fragility, and how you plan to wear it in order to choose the right cut.

Choose a Setting

Next, you’ll want to choose your setting. Consider these popular settings:

  • Solitaire: This is the most popular setting, and it’s the most cost-effective because it requires only one stone. It’s simple and pairs well with everything.
  • Halo: These settings use smaller stones around a larger central stone to make the ring look bigger, busier, and turn it into more of a statement piece.
  • Three stone: This setting features a center stone flanked by two slightly smaller stones. It’s a flashy statement piece and the most expensive settings.
  • Side stone: This one uses smaller stones to make the ring look bigger and busier, which turns it into more of a statement piece.

Popular Gemstones to Consider

There are dozens of types of gemstones to consider. Each gemstone offers you different colors—and different symbolic meanings, too. Below is a list of some popular gemstones to consider.

  • Aquamarine symbolizes hope, health and youth. It comes in shades of blue with hints of cyan and green. It can be brittle, making it sensitive to chips and scratches.
  • Ruby represents integrity, confidence and strength. Rubies, also known as the King of Gems, are extremely tough and suitable for everyday wear.
  • Sapphire symbolizes faithfulness, truth and insight. Sapphires are hard, making them perfect for everyday wear.
  • Diamonds are elegant and versatile, representing eternal love, invincibility and fearlessness. Stones with little to no color are most popular. Diamonds are extremely durable. They are considered the hardest gemstone out there.
  • Emerald represents unchanging love, rebirth and faithfulness. It’s a dark to medium green with hints of blue. These stones must be cleaned gently because they are prone to scratches and chips.

Annie D. knew she was getting proposed to soon, and she wanted to make sure her diamond engagement ring was as special as she knew her engagement moment was going to be. She’s admittedly very particular about her jewelry and knew exactly what she wanted: a custom engagement ring that incorporated the family diamonds that were passed down to her.

Annie brought a drawing of her ring to a local, small jewelry store and began working with them. She gave them the drawing of the type of ring she wanted in June, but five long months passed with no progress from said jeweler. Annie hasn’t received a single email, text message or phone call from the business, so she decided to end her process with the jeweler in November.

Annie's drawing of her dream engagement ring

Thankfully, Annie’s mother, Cindy, was having her ring upgraded at Miriam’s Jewelry around this very time. She spoke wonders of the customer service she received. Cindy loved how responsive and thorough the Miriam’s Jewelry team was throughout her own upgrade process, so she recommended Miriam’s to Annie. Annie visited the Ponte Vedra Beach location, where Benji and Ian greeted her with warm smiles and undivided attention. After showing Benji and Ian the illustration of the unique engagement ring Annie wanted, the Miriam’s team knew exactly what to do.

“They involved me every step of the way,” said Annie. “The difference between Miriam’s and the first store I went to was communication. Benji and Ian were on top of it and in constant communication with me, asking for approval during the entire process. They were genuinely excited about my engagement and the ring, which made me even more excited.”

In just a couple of weeks, Benji and Ian were ready to show Annie her finished engagement ring. It was everything Annie had hoped for and more: the perfect engagement ring. It included her family’s diamonds and several new diamonds, beautifully blended together to create a unique, one-of-a-kind, custom ring that Annie and her loved one will cherish forever.

Annie's custom engagement on her finger

“I would definitely recommend Miriam’s Jewelry over any other local jeweler,” said Annie. “They’re accountable and actually care about their customers; they make you feel like you’re part of their family.”

When searching for the perfect piece of jewelry, you’ll find that there are many options available ranging from jewelry booths at big chain stores to cozy counters at family-owned jewelry stores. It’s always best to buy fine jewelry from the family-owned jewelry store because these locally-owned shops offer benefits that big stores can’t match. Here are 10 of the top reasons to choose a family-owned shop for your antique and trendy jewelry needs—and everything in between.

Superior Quality

Big retailers tend to focus on big sales and high turnover. Small shops focus on the details, which means you’ll get a higher level of craftsmanship. Many family-owned jewelry shops offer pieces that rival top brands but that you won’t find anywhere else. Also, while chain stores don’t regularly use natural gemstones, a family-owned jeweler tends to offer genuine stones more often.

Better Selection

Family-owned shops have one big advantage over big stores: access to a greater selection of vendors unavailable to larger stores. Miriam’s Jewelry has buying power to hand-select one-of-a-kind pieces for their clients. This means you’ll have more options to customize your purchase, and you’ll even be able to shop vintage jewelry, estate jewelry and antique jewelry to your heart’s desire.

Local Economic Support

Shopping small helps your local economy because the money spent is more likely to end up back in your town. It might surprise you to learn that 48 percent of the money you spend at small businesses recirculates back into your community.

Expert Jewelers

At a family-owned shop, you’ll find expertise much greater than at a mass retailer. The staff at these small shops have spent their whole lives working with jewelry. You’ll find people who are excited to educate you about jewelry, diamonds and gems.

Their staff can also offer you an expert jewelry appraisal. Employees at big stores are often only given basic knowledge—with a focus on sales. Most family-owned shops also offer expert design skills and jewelry repairs. At family-owned shops, you’re more likely to interact with the store’s founders, ensuring that you’re serviced by the most knowledgeable person on the team.

At big stores, the customer service hotline isn’t always helpful. At a family-owned jewelry shop, you’ll find people who prioritize accountability. To make your experience positive, they’ll efficiently answer questions and solve problems.

Small jewelry stores are run by real people–people you’ll probably meet as soon as you step into the store–whereas chain stores are run by faceless corporations. When you visit a local jeweler, you can often speak directly with the owner or their family members.

Miriam’s Jewelry is run by Miriam and her two daughters, Leah and Benji. The staff at family-owned businesses care deeply about their shop and customers, which means you’ll experience a greater sense of trust than you’d find at a large retailer–with their name on the door and a big reputation.

Sense of Community

Family-owned businesses are a staple to the communities they serve, and Miriam’s Jewelry is no exception. Having started her business from her Jacksonville home over 50 years ago, Miriam and her family are devoted Jacksonville citizens.

These businesses often give back to their towns and communities, never turning down an opportunity to donate time and resources to local charities. Shopping local is a great way for you to become more involved in your own community.

Jewelry Value

On average, jewelry at big retailers has a 300 to 500 percent markup. This is because customers pay for magazine advertising, shop overhead, staffing and more. The price you pay is for more than the jewelry itself. Big retailers also buy in bulk and offer little in the way of customization. This means the investment you made in a piece of jewelry won’t set you apart from the hundreds of customers to come before and after you.

By contrast, family-owned businesses don’t push the expensive overhead fees that you’ll see at big stores, and they’re more likely to offer highly customizable pieces with genuine diamonds and gemstones. Family-owned businesses can offer competitive prices for jewelry that you simply won’t find anywhere else.

In-House Jewelers

If you need repairs or adjustments, you need an in-house jeweler. With an in-house jeweler, your piece of jewelry never leaves the establishment and is under the care of someone with a lifetime of experience. This ensures your jewelry will not be lost or stolen. Service is often faster, too.

Personalized Customer Service

Family-owned businesses are run by real people who want to make your experience perfect. These shops are passionate about their work. Small businesses rely largely on word of mouth to bring in new customers. These family-owned companies work hard to guarantee great customer service.

You can shop smarter by shopping locally. The passionate, expert staff at a family-owned business makes all the difference when shopping for jewelry. Looking for an engagement ring or new piece to add to your collection? Contact Miriam’s Jewelry today to schedule a personal jewelry design consultation.
